How to Tell If a Sapphire Is Real (Without Being a Gem Expert)

You’ve probably seen “sapphire” rings online going for RM200… but how do you really know if it’s the real deal? At The Bilal, we believe knowledge = confidence. So here’s a quick, no-BS guide to help you spot an authentic sapphire even if you’re not a gem expert.

1. Look at the Sparkle – Real sapphires don’t sparkle like diamonds. Their glow is softer, almost silky. If it’s overly shiny or looks like glass, it’s probably synthetic or fake.

2. Colour Consistency- Natural sapphires often have slight variations in tone. If the colour looks too perfect or overly even, it might be lab-created.

3. Tiny Flaws? That’s a Good Thing – Inclusions (aka natural imperfections) are normal and even expected. A flawless stone might actually be fake. Think of these as birthmarks that prove authenticity.

What’s the Deal with Lab-Grown vs Natural?

Lab-grown sapphires look similar but don’t carry the same rarity, story, or long-term value. A natural sapphire, especially with a certificate and known origin, holds prestige.

Why the Huge Price Differences?

It comes down to 4 things: origin, colour, clarity, and cut.

A certified Ceylon sapphire? That could go up to RM20,000++. A heated or treated sapphire? Possibly under RM1,000. It’s not just the gem, it’s the journey it took to get to you.

Now that you know how to tell what’s real, you might be wondering… Where do these legendary sapphires actually come from?

Stay tuned, we’re about to take you on a global tour.
